Loving and learning together, with Jesus
At St Peter’s, Religious Education is at the heart of everything we do.
We are proud to be part of Christus Catholic Trust, working in partnership with our parish, families and the Diocese of Brentwood to form children who are compassionate, curious, reflective and inspired by the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Our Vision for Religious Education

At St Peter’s, we believe every child is uniquely created and loved by God. Our RE curriculum enables pupils to:
Develop a deep and personal relationship with God
Grow in knowledge of Scripture, Catholic teaching and tradition
Understand the richness of the Catholic faith and how it is lived today
Think theologically, ethically and spiritually
Engage in respectful dialogue with people of all faiths and worldviews
Live out the Gospel values through service and action
The Religious Education Directory (RED) 2023

We follow the Religious Education Curriculum Directory (2023), the national framework for Catholic schools in England.
This ensures our RE curriculum is:
Progressive and coherent
Rooted in Scripture and the teaching of the Church
Aligned with Catholic theology and tradition
Designed to form religiously literate, reflective young people
The curriculum is structured through:
Curriculum Branches
Knowledge Lenses
Ways of Knowing
These shape the way we plan units, teach lessons, assess learning and support pupils’ development.

We allocate at least 10% of curriculum time to Religious Education across the school.
Teaching, Learning & Assessment in RE
'Lessons are creative and rooted in the RED, enhanced by an exceptional bespoke St Peter’s offer, resulting in high levels of engagement and challenge through deep questioning and exploration of themes.' School Improvement Partner, 2026
Teaching in RE at St Peter’s is exceptional because:
Staff receive high-quality professional development from school leaders and the Diocese.
Teachers have secure subject knowledge and use creative pedagogical approaches.
Lessons begin with a ‘Brain Dump’ to activate prior learning.
Ways of Knowing structure thinking, discussion and assessment.
Pupils engage in rich dialogue, questioning, reasoning and reflection.
Feedback is purposeful, aligned to clear learning intentions and success criteria.
RE books show high standards, pride, and beautifully presented work.
Pupils consistently achieve outstanding outcomes in RE, performing at levels comparable to other core subjects.
Learning About Other Faiths
In line with the Church’s call to dialogue, pupils engage in the study of:
Judaism
Islam
Other Christian denominations
This forms part of our Dialogue & Encounter curriculum branch and takes place during the Summer Term.
